Stanford UniversityAPPLIED PHYSICS/PHYSICS COLLOQUIUM Tuesday, October 19, 2021 Cynthia FriendHarvard University & The Kavli Foundation “Can the U.S. Compete in Basic Energy Sciences?” Key findings and recommendations based on a new report by the Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee will be discussed. The role of scientific discovery as a cornerstone of American prosperity is underscored. Benchmarks of U.S. research output and capacity against global competitors in areas of fundamental research critical to the U.S. Department of Energy’s mission were developed to evaluate global competition. The report’s findings are based on both empirical data and broad consultation.. The key overarching finding is that other nations are rapidly catching up and, in some areas, overtaking the US in basic science impact in critical physical sciences research areas. Possible strategies for addressing the need to advance fundamental science in the US will be discussed and the report will be placed in the broader context of historical funding of basic science globally.
